OPTIONAL SENTENCE STARTERS:
The United States & South Africa are similar/different because __________ . For example, the article _________ states, "_____ " This shows that _______. Similarly, the article _______ states "_____" This shows that_______.
The United States & South Africa are similar because in Africa in the past blacks were under racial segregation, as they are now in the United States but it’s not talked about. Now there are no laws for racial segregation . For example, the article “ When Whites Just don’t get it” states, "The gap has worsened in the last decade, and the United States now has a greater wealthy gap by race than S.Africa did during apartheid( Whites in America on average own almost 18 times as much as blacks; In S.Africa in 1970, the ratio was about 15 times " This shows that there are some invisible gaps between blacks and whites from the past since now , so it intends that black have worse live in U.S than whites have.
ReplyDeleteThe United States and South Africa are different because they have different perspective inside and outside of school. For example, in “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” states “Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science courses that whites student”(Kristof 17). This shows that their parents have to tell their kids that education is important and it is going to help long term, but if the parents don’t told kids that anything about education the childrens are going to follow their parents and that is bad. Similarly, in “Apartheid’s long shadow” states “Though some formerly all white suburban schools are excellent, many students who attend rural and township schools are so badly educated that they qualify for only difficult labor jobs” (Dugger 14-18). This shows that children who are black thought whites were better than blacks.
ReplyDeleteThe United States and South Africa are similar because the education gaps between black and white students in both countries are both large. For example, the article Apartheid’s Long Shadow states that in South Africa “Only 2 out of 100 sixth-graders in in predominantly black schools performed at grade level on a math test in 2005, compare with 2 out of 3 children in schools one reserved for whites that are now integrated, but generally in richer neighborhoods.” This shows that black students in South Africa have a much lower education level than white students. Similarly, the article When Whites Just Don’t Get It states that in the United States “Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science course than white students.”
ReplyDeleteThe United States and South Africa are different because of apartheid. For example,in the article “Apartheid’s long shadow” it shows that Africans are not as rich as Americans because of apartheid. as the article “when whites just don’t get it” mentions that blacks weren’t as well educated as whites because black students were less likely to attend schools offering advanced classes. This is all happening because of apartheid. Most of the black students are attending schools that aren’t as good as whites school maybe because their parents can’t afford for better schools.
ReplyDeleteThe United States & South Africa are different because Black students are less likely to go to school than white students. They are also likely to be suspended and expelled compared to white students. For example, the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” states, “Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science courses than white students. They are three times as likely to be suspended and expelled, setting them up for educational failure.” this shows Black students still have a fear of discrimination and they can’t study hard like white in school because of that. In the article, the students in U.S are usually able to make it to 12th grade, but it’s still hard for the students in South Africas to make it to 12th grade because of the long term effects of apartheid. For example, the article “Apartheid’s long shadow” states, " South Africa is at risk of keeping its racial and class divide rather than closing it. Half the country’s students never make it to 12th grade." This shows that many students who attend rural and township schools are so badly educated that they qualify for only difficult labor job.
ReplyDeleteThe United States & South Africa are different because the gap between Blacks and Whites is still big ,no matter education, economy, political system, all of them are really different. For example, the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It states “The net worth of the blackhouse in the united states is $ 6314, compared with $110500 for the average white household "This shows that the wealth gap between them are really big ,and blacks live in the different area from the whites. And in South Africa , the wealth gap is not as much as America, but they are usually poor.Similarly, the article“When Whites Just Don’t Get It states "They are three times as likely to be suspended and expelled, setting them up for educational failure." This shows that the blacks are lazier than Whites though they have opportunity , and better education than South Africa. All in all, America and South Africa is different , they have different conditions , and different people.
ReplyDeleteThe United States & South Africa are similar because both the blacks in these countries are despised. For example, the article “Apartheid’s long shadow” states, "South Africa’s schools are still struggling with the long-term effects of the apartheid area, when the government established a separate “Bantu" education system that tried to make Blacks lower class workers for whites.” This shows that African students cannot have a good education and study place while the white students can have a better chance to learn. Their lives had been written even before they were born. Similarly, the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” states "The net worth of the average black household in the United States is $6,314, compared with $110,500 for the average white household, according to 2011 government data." This shows that The blacks in the US have unequal encounter on salary, education and the character. The apartheid in the US is even stronger than that in Africa. The reason of this is the influence from history changes people’s mind.
ReplyDeleteThe United States & South Africa are different because the schools and education in the United States is much better the South Africa. That not only inference the knowledge, but also can lead their life direction. For example, the article “When White Just Don’t Get It” states, “Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science courses than white students.” THis shows that the black students usually don’t have opportunity to get the advance class .Similarly, the article “Apartheid’s long shadow” states Seniors at Kwamfundo high school, outside of Cape Town, sang songs and protested outside the staff lounge because their bussiness teacher had once again failed to show up for class. This shows that even the teacher there don’t want to teach. As a result, the black teenager will be more difficult to find good job than white people.
ReplyDeleteThe United States and South Africa are similar because there are still inequalities in both countries. For example, the article Apartheid’s Long Shadow states,”Though some formerly all-white suburban schools are excellent, many students who attend rural and township schools are so badly educated...”This shows that students in Africa cannot get equal-quality education, therefore, they do not have the same chance for jobs or something else.Similarly, the article When Whites Just Don’t Get It states”The United States Sentencing Commission concluded that black men get sentences one-fifth longer than white men for committing the same crimes.”This shows that blacks can’t be treated fairly as whites when they commit a crime, instead, they get different punishment.
ReplyDeleteThe United States & South Africa are different in the education, united states now has a greater wealth gap by race than south africa did during apartheid, the article "When whites don't get it" states that, "black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science courses than white students." This shows how bad are black people trated. Similarly, the article "Apartheid's long shadow". statesthat, "schools are so badly education that they qualify for only difficult labor jobs." This shows that how are they seprating people from all difrent cultures.
ReplyDeleteI think South Africa is similar to United States because of education. For example, the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It”; the author states that “[Black students] are three times as likely to be suspended and expelled, setting them up for educational failure.” This gap in education system causes the huge difference between Blacks and White’s lives. Similar in the article “Apartheid’s Long shadow”, the author states “Though some formerly all-white suburban schools are excellent, [black students] who attend rural and township schools are so badly educated that they qualify or only difficult labor jobs.” These two quotes explain Blacks are more likely have a lower wage than whites because of education. Not just in America, there is the same problem in education system in South Africa too. Many teachers are not able to teach the students well, so the students cannot teach their children well. The education systems in both America and South Africa are good for black people. Therefore, America is similar to South Africa for black people because of the education.
ReplyDeleteThe United States & South Africa are similar because blacks today still experience racism and there are still boundaries between blacks and whites just like the era of apartheid. Both countries have racism. For example, the article “Apartheid’s long shadow”, states “The white minority stopped blacks from having even basic rights and essentially treated them as lower class citizens”. This shows that blacks are treated unfair and unequal back then in Africa. Similarly, the article “When Whites Just Don’t Get It” states “The United States Sentencing Commission that black men get sentences one-fifth longer than white men for committing the same crimes. This proves how biased people here in America are. They are more in favor towards whites. The way they treat blacks is different the way they treated people with the same skin color as them.
ReplyDeleteThe United States & South Africa are different because The economy is difference. For example, the line 11-12 of the article When Whites Just Don’t Get It , "Whites in America on average own almost 18 times as much as blacks... " This shows that in America, the black have less social status because they do not have enough money and quality of education. In nowadays, the social status always show by the quality of education. When a black that have the high quality of education be rejected by the company, they will not get as much money as the White that have the same quality of education. differently, the economy gap in South Africa was not big as American. So that, the quality of the white and the black was not have more that 10 times.
