Will "Iraqi Kurdistan" become any other "Little Sparta"?

US defence officials use the phrase "Little Sparta", referring to the ancient Greek city state revered for its small but potent army when they want to give a compliment to a junior military partner.  Iraqi Kurdistan is making a major play to become the next "Little Sparta". The Peshmerga - Kurdistan's fighting force - has always enjoyed the admiration and trust of the US military.  A senior Kurdish delegation making the rounds in Washington DC, lobbying Congressional leaders and think tanks to support a radical tightening of the military ties between the US and the Kurdistan Regional Government.
I think the US will not support that.  It is because if have war happened in the Middle East, It will affect the whole world by stop oil transportation with other country. That may make the other country that are more powerful to be in this war.  If so, the World War Three will be happen.  That did not good for the interest of America.

Opinion: the US will support that or not?
       If so, what will happen?

Drug to Neverland?

Recently, a study in Seattle shows chemical rapamycin might make pets live longer. Rapamycin is currently using with other medicine in organ-transport patients. This chemical can slow down the speed of cell growth, thus slow down cancer spreading. It also can improve heart functioning which scientists are expecting the most on extending pets’ lives. About 50 studies show that rapamycin can extend pets’ life spans about 9 to 40 percent.  Now the researchers are hoping for more pets to sign up. The scientists are also hoping one day this drug can benefit human.

I think this drug will be bring a lot of joy for pet lovers. We will no longer suffer from the grief of losing a pet. It will be very helpful in the future if it can be used on human too. We’ve always wondering or even wanting an immortal life. We can do so much things, if we have more time. However, I don’t think I would want an immortal life. It’s always better to have a deadline, so I don’t procrastinate and get more things done.

  1. Do you think it is mortal to extend one’s life? Why? If it is possible, will you do it on your pet?
  2. What do you think about living forever?

Disney no-fly zones

The article" No-fly zones over Disney's parks come under some flak" talks about the debate around no-fly zones above Disney's parks. According to Wikipedia, a no-fly zone is a territory or an area over which aircraft are not permitted to fly. The idea of Disney no-fly zones was original offered by Disney and it have been law since 2003. They said their purpose is for visitors' safety, but some people think Disney use no-fly ones to get rid of advertising airplanes over the park. No-fly zones are blamed by aircraft owners and pilots because it hurts their benefits. Mark Skinner, the owner of an company which gives helicopter tutor, pointed out that the law is unfair because airplanes can fly over other large theme parks.

https://www.google.com/search?

I agree with the idea of no-fly zones, because as a visitor, I do not wish to receive attack from the sky when I have fun in the park. It seems to be bad news for airplane owners and pilots, but sometimes ad airplane is a little bit annoying. It is also proved that no-fly zones help prevent big terror attacks. What do you think about Disney no-fly zones? Do you think the law should be kept?

The article "Everyone says students in small class learn more, why does it work" published by Seattle Times, adapted by Newsela stuffs on November 18 2014 says it seems obvious that giving teacher fewer students to teach is a change that makes sense. In small class students are getting more individual attention and performing better. The idea is popular with parents and lawmaker alike. In fact, at least 40 states cut class size in the past 15 years. But despite more than 40 years researches, it has been hard to measure the result of reducing class size.

I agree with this. Lowering class sizes means hiring more teachers but I think that reducing class size and hiring more teachers makes teacher feel easy to teach students and makes students receive more individual attention. If there are more students in one class, it is going to be harder to give teacher's attention to each students. Here's some information from teachers who experienced in larger class and small class. "In a big class, everybody in the back of  the room is talking and giggling, and the little kids are throwing things at each other." "But in a small class, the first thing a teacher said is 'Let's all bring all chairs around me here in a circle.'" The class which is fewer than 20 students might have their biggest effect on students who try to avoid looking at teacher. The reason is they can not hide.

1. Do you think making class size smaller is good for students and teachers?
2. Do you think the kids would better take class as the picture above to make less students who don't take class seriously?

Everyone knows students learn more in smaller classes, or do they?

Everyone knows students learn more in smaller classes, or do they?

The main idea of this article is about should there be less children in every class? I agree with this because, if you have less students in every class the teacher can help you and teach you very well. Also, if there is less amount of children in one class, teacher can help individuals. I feel that it is a good thing they change, because it will be easier to ask questions to the teachers, ask for help.

Liliane Perreault

This article talks about a young guy called Hussein Mansour. Hussein is a Rebel. Which means they are fighting against the Syrian government. Their goal is to remove President Bashar Assad. As the Syrian civil war rages on, more teens are taking place. Many of Hussein's uncles and cousins have been killed fighting government forces. That does stop him from being a part of the rebels. He carries arms around with him. He is way ton young to be in control of such a powerful and harmful weapon. People worry on the effect of having teenagers fight. They are worried that it will become a habit for teens. Hussain drop out of school because of war but he promised his mom that he will finish education after. Even if he knows he will die.

I agree that teens will develop a habit of killing because its going to shape their mentality.

I disagree with Hussein's decision in joining the group because it wont do him any good. i f they want to stop war they need to stop fighting.

Questions

What do you think they should do to stop war.
Do you think somebody should do something about the rebels fighting? who?
Do you think the rebels will have an negative effect on Syria.

PRO/CON: Will sending U.S. guns to Ukraine help or hurt?

Ukraine needs U.S. weapons to stop Russia from taking more of its land

WASHINGTON — Congress can push the United States in a better direction to help Ukraine fight against Russia. A proposal in Congress would give Ukraine $350 million for weapons and other military equipment.
Ukraine needs the aid to stop Russia from taking more of its land. U.S. lawmakers should vote yes on the proposal.
Russia took Crimea from Ukraine in March.
After Russia took Crimea, in an unfair election Crimeans voted 95.5 percent to join Russia. U.S. and European leaders called the election illegal. Then they blocked some trade out of Russia and started doing military drills in the area. None of those actions stopped Putin.

Russian President Vladimir Putin dreams of bringing back the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a huge country in which Russia ruled over Ukraine and many Eastern European countries.
Everyone in political world strongly agree that Putin is a Hitler ,but in our , modern world. The one thing he can do brilliant is lie. He lies to everyone ,reporters ,journalists and many others. And he won't stop as Hitler did not. In one of his interview about Ukraine , journalist asked him about any military equipment on the territory of Ukraine (that information was given by the White House ) he said that America always lie and they have no power anymore. So i hope , that world will help Ukraine , because tomorrow Putin can come to your lands and fight there.

China and the U.S, Become a group again

As the conflict between Japan and China on Diaoyu Islands more intense, the relationship between the U.S and China seems like got worse. However, the conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014 talk about the cooperation to deal with the greenhouse gas in their country makes the stiff relationship become better. According to the article "U.S. and China in joint effort to fight climate change" both of them are willing to make effort to change the climates problem.
In my opinion, this conference is not only good for the people and climate around the world, but also demonstrated the leader of China and U.S are going to  make up and solve problem together. That's what people in two country really want to see.

Pumpkins growing like Cinderella's ride in Wisconsin

SUMMARY:

The article, "Pumpkins from another planet? No, Wisconsin" talks about the large pumpkins growing in Wisconsin that they put in contests. Glen Martin, who is the president of a group of people who grows giant pumpkins called Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers, decorated their front yard with self grown humongous pumpkins that attracted many people's attention. Wisconsin is known for its giant pumpkins. It was ranked fifth in giant pumpkin winners. Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers are increasing in number, with an amount of $25 growers get a book on how to grow a giant pumpkin, list of growers and seeds.

In the city of New Richmond, where there are a lot of giant pumpkin growers too, a pumpkin grower Steven won the world record in 2010, for the biggest pumpkin. His pumpkin weighs 1,810 pounds. The current winner this year is from Switzerland which weighs 2,096 pounds.

It may seem pretty easy but growing a giant pumpkin is very challenging and takes a lot of effort. You should look after it everyday and have enough space for it to grow on. Flowers are pollinated manually by hand. A horticulture professor. James Nienhuis grown pumpkins for years that weigh 400 pounds. These pumpkins are carved into boats for the pumpkin race in Lake Mendota.

During a contest pumpkins cannot be too rotten and have holes, cracks. You may think that some growers compete for rewards, plaque and money, but for them the true reward is the outcome and the joy of seeing people getting shocked when they see the giant pumpkins.

http://media.jrn.com/

ANALYSIS:

I think growing a giant pumpkin would be a great experience. It can also be a great hobby, because it gives joy and fun to you and to other people. You will also be able to join fun contests and win prizes. I also think that learning how to grow these enormous pumpkins would be interesting. Seeing peoples face and reactions will take away the tiredness of growing a giant pumpkin.

DISCUSSION:

  • Do you think it is just funny and a waste of time growing a giant pumpkin?
  • What do you think are the factors on growing this enormous pumpkins?. What causes them to grow this big?
  • Do you think genetics and environment affect its growth?

The Problem We All Have

The article When homework becomes library work by Miami Herald shows that there are few problems to students of using the internet. It states that more and more teachers prefer students finish their homework online to the paperwork. Most of the students are getting to adapt this Digital solution, but some are still not. The students do not have any internet or computers have to spend more time on their homework. They have to go to the library or somewhere has free internet. They waste time on their ways. The computers there are limited and when there is no more computers they have to wait. That may prevent them doing homework.

College mentor David Paez (left), 21, a student at the Art Institute of Miami, works with Lavingston Humes, 17, on a laptop that is provided for students in the North Dade Library branch's You Media program.
                                                                                           www.newsela.com/
Finishing homework online is comprehensible because of the portability. The textbooks are really heavy. Plus, students can do homework without a desk. It is good for normal students but not for poor students who cannot afford the internet. They have to find somewhere they can work in. That is kind of unfair for them just because they have less money. I do not think the convenience is greater than grades. I think the teachers have to consider about this. There must be some better ways to finish the homework. I suggest teachers give separated sheets of book and homework to students that have no ability to get the internet. Or the libraries can use their money to buy more textbook but not computers.
Do you like doing homework online?                                                                                                 What ideas do you have to help the poor students?

The best Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant tried to shoot the Lakers to victory for many times.Lakers fans felt every one of his attempts at Staples Center, groaning when he missed and celebrating when he scored.Bryant's 39 points weren't enough, which made one wonder, when will the Lakers eventually win a game? They lost to the Phoenix Suns, 106-112, fell to 0-5 and extended their worst start since 1957.Bryant took 37 shots Tuesday and made only 14, a subpar 37.8%. It was his highest shot count since he lofted 41 against Golden State in December 2012.
Why didKobe Bryant try again and agian, and Lakers still lost the game? Kobe has tried his best for this team. To be honest, he is old, he shouldn’t do so many things for his team, his effect should encourage his team mates, but his team mates are too bad, they should do something by themselves ! I hope lakers will have good future!

What do you think of this event? Do you agree with me?

Protecting Syria's history from war

.

Protecting Syria's history from war

Syrian rebels have been fighting against the Syrian government for more than three years. It started in 2011. At that time, people in many Arab countries began to protest in the streets. They wanted honest government and more freedom. In Syria, President Bashar Assad used the military to stop the protests. Many people were killed and a civil war began. The war is still going on today. The rebels want Assad out. Important historical sites are being destroyed. There are six places in Syria that the United Nations has called especially important. They are known as World Heritage sites. Five of those have been damaged in the war, said a new report. Richard Leventhal runs the Cultural Heritage Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He works with Brian Daniels. Their group wrote the new report.  20 Syrians are trying "to save the family photos for the country,” he said. The report does not say which groups destroyed the sites. Daniels said both the rebels and the Syrian government are responsible the destruction.

Time Travel Possibilities

Article “ Time travel may be possible for certain tiny particles, but probably not” explains how and why time travel is both possible and impossible. The author states that although time travel has not yet succeeded in the real world, but at least it is possible in the math world. In order to make the hypothesis succeed there must be something strong enough that can bend space and time. CTC, stands for “closed timelike curve”, it is a powerful gravitational field that can bend the spacetime back on itself. CTC can provide people opportunities to go back. However time travel has many issues, such as one’s action can undo itself, which means this person has never been born. The article also suggests other ways of time travel and some solutions of the paradox.

http://images.rcp.realclearpolitics.com/259479_5_.jpg

I think time travel is great. It allows you to go back to visit someone who is already gone now or fix some issues that bothers you a lot in present days. Time trips can lead to countless possibilities. Especially now, more and more time travel related movies/fictions release, more and more people are interested in time travel. Scientists put a lot of effort on this topic. However, whether it is possible or not, I don’t think I have the courage to go on a time trip. Decisions I made yesterday made me unique now. As I mentioned before, time travel can cause many possibilities including personalities. I’m not sure I would think the same way after I go back and change a couple of things in my past.

  • What do you think about time travel? Would you go back if it is possible?
  • Do you think it is the right thing to do that we are making time travel machine?

Effects by Gaza War

The article, "School bells are ringing in Israel, with mixed emotions" shows that schools in Israel started and children returned to school with relief and tiredness after a summer of war. Though the war has ended, the pain last in people's heart. More than 2,000 people died in this war, economy and society was also damaged. School funding had to be cut to pay for the war. People especially children were effected mentally, for example, a mother said finding a place to escape while noticing any sign of war now becomes a part of her children's life.

                                                             https://www.google.com/url

I feel that war hit people not only physically but also mentally. People were scared during the war: families were separated, homes were destroyed and they were the one who pay for the damage of the war. They are innocent, but they have to bear the pain. War is not the only way to solve problem, so why do we choose the way which the loss outweighs the gain?

What do you think government should do about this? What is the best way to solve it?
