Is Geography Destiny?

The geographic theme of region and movement proves that geography is destiny in West Africa because the region where people live affect their lives, how they live and their health as well. Therefore it’s like they’re destined to get that disease because they live there.

Region

According to Answers About Ebola, “The disease  Ebola gets its name from the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The disease was first reported in a village on the river in 1976”.U.S. and British troops head to West Africa to help fight Ebola virus states that, “the outbreak began in Guinea. It quickly spread to the other African nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal”.This shows that the region has something to do with the people in that specific place like Western Africa or spreading of disease. They acquired the disease because they live in that area.

Movement

According to the article Answers About Ebola, “the two American aid workers who recently became infected with Ebola in West Africa were flown back to the U.S. and hospitalized immediately”. Answers About Ebola states that, “Disease has spread through the West African countries of Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and, most recently, Nigeria”.This demonstrates that movement has an effect too, like the movement of people from US to Africa can get this disease called Ebola which is also moving/spreading everyday throughout Western Africa and in the future it can also spread in the whole world if it wasn’t cured.

  1. Sheena, I liked how you cited specific evidence to support your argument. However, I disagree that geography is destiny. I believe people can change their surroundings so their region does not control their future.
